The Problem

Inactivity and poor diet lead to increased levels of obesity and increased health risks.
-
67.2% of Allegany County adults are overweight or obese, the highest percentage in Maryland
-
Only one in four adults in Allegany County reports consuming 5 servings of fruits and vegetable a day.
-
Nearly one quarter of Allegany County adults reports doing no physical activity at all.
-
Children, teens, and adults who are overweight are at greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, asthma, and arthritis.
Children model the behaviors of their parents, and learn habits early on in the home, school, and community. The health of our community is at risk.
-
Almost one third of children and adolescents (age 6-19) are overweight or at risk for being overweight.
-
Only 1 out of 4 children get 30 minutes of physical activity in a day.
-
In the past 20 years the percentage of overweight children has more than doubled.
-
Poor nutrition, even in non-overweight children, can affect brain development and performance in school.
